The Department of Physics, Faculty of Sciences, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), has held its second seminar series on application of potential models in Quantum Mechanical Systems.

The event, held at the NOUN headquarters, Jabi, Abuja, took place on Thursday, June 20, 2025. Head of Physics Department, Dr. Efiong Ibanga, said 'there are a lot of models in Physics; Mathematics makes no sense until it has been given a physical interpretation.'

The chairman of the event, Prof. Dede Aliyu, noted that the seminar series of the month of June had an interesting topic on Quantum Chemistry, which, according to him, has been teaching in the area for more than 25 years.

Quantum Chemistry is related to Physics; Physics talks about particles while Chemistry is about atoms and molecules that is just the difference. We use the same equation but not so in-depth into their mathematical formulations.

We just try to apply the mathematical aspect in understanding the nature of bonding of our molecules. I urge all participants to give a rapt attention so that we all will learn new things from today’s seminar, Aliyu said.

On his part, Dr. Etido Inyang, discussed about theoretical physics. Quantum Mechanic simply has basic formulation which we call two regimen and these two regimen are the non-relative and relative regimen.

The non-relativistic regime, we are simply referring to particles that travels with a speed less than the speed of light. The particles that travels close to the speed of light are classified as relativistic regime.

He described how particles atoms or objects move and behave based on the force acting between them. That is what potential model does in Physics. Former Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Technology Innovation and Research, Prof. Monioluwa Olaniyi commended the presenter, and asked how the theories could apply to NOUN as an Open and Distance Learning institution.

Olaniyi, who also inquired about the virtual solutions for NOUN’s laboratories, underlined their importance for the university programmes and spoke in favour of a collaboration where necessary.
